About Alessia Morrell
Alessia is a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. She received her Master’s in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University and completed her eight month internship at MyLife Counselling under the direct supervision of our Director Mark Nixon. Alessia was so well liked by her clients and colleagues that we insisted she return as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) at MyLife!
Alessia is passionate about helping people struggling with anxiety, depression, addictions and chronic pain. She knows first-hand the toll that anxiety and chronic illness can take in a person’s life. Having worked on overcoming her own severe anxiety and chronic pain, Alessia draws from both her personal experience and professional training in helping others.
Alessia is incredibly warm, accepting, and encouraging in her work with clients. She draws from a variety of approaches including Person Centered Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Polyvagal Therapy. Working with Alessia means not only will you feel accepted and understood, she’ll help you develop concrete skills to help improve your mental health and relationships.
Alessia has worked extensively in the field of mental health over the past 12 years. At the Chatham Women’s Emergency Shelter, she supported survivors of domestic violence and understands the unique challenges involved in rebuilding a life after abuse. At the Brenda Stratford Society, Alessia worked at a progressive housing program helping people address financial barriers and provided counselling for domestic violence and mental health.
Alessia is also highly experienced working with addictions with both adults and youth. At the Aventa Treatment Foundation in Calgary, she was both a front-line counsellor and Team Lead responsible for supporting women and youth working through a variety of addictions in a residential treatment setting. She helped individuals learn the life skills necessary to build and maintain their recovery.
Alessia also enjoys working with family issues. During her time at Closer to Home Community Services, she provided in-home support for at risk families who were involved with Child Services. She implemented the Teaching Family Model to help families gain additional parenting skills and manage family crises.
In her downtime, Alessia keeps her life in balance through creative activities such as acrylic painting and card making. Part of her self-care includes her love of comedy and maintaining a healthy sense of humour!
