About Cam Henderson
We’re excited to welcome Cam Henderson as one of our dedicated counselling interns at MyLife Counselling! Cam completed his undergraduate studies at Carleton University in Ottawa where he studied Cognitive Science and minored in Neuroscience and Mental Health. He has recently completed his coursework in Yorkville University’s Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology. Cam is now completing his internship under the supervision of our Clinical Director Mark Nixon. Cam provides counselling at a reduced rate to help make counselling more accessible to the community
Cam has spent his professional career supporting people from all walks of life. He has over eight years of experience closely supporting adults and youth (16+) struggling with generalized anxiety, social anxiety, depression, anger management and problems of meaning. As a youth support worker and therapeutic mentor with Spark Lifecare, Cam developed his ability to build strong therapeutic relationships and address the emotional, behavioural and social needs of those he worked with. He has continued to hone these skills in his work with the Canadian Mental Health Association. As a volunteer university content tutor, Cam helped students with disabilities and provided one-on-one mentor supporting people with social anxiety to engage in their communities.
Clients would describe Cam as positive, encouraging and non-judgmental. He has been an advocate for the continued destigmitization of mental health support and has shown an innate ability to connect and empathize with people who are experiencing emotional hardships and people struggling with self-esteem.
Cam draws from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Person Centered Therapy. He values the importance of building strong rapport with clients and using evidence-based approaches. Cam is interested in the interplay of mindfulness, stoic philosophy and what makes life meaningful.
In his free time, Cam can be found hiking on the Bruce Trail with his partner of seven years and their basset hound. Cam has recently begun a passion project where he leads hikes and facilitates other outdoor activities in hopes of promoting physical and mental health. He is interested in the mental health benefits of immersion in nature and hopes to include nature in his future practice.
